Red Algae: It can produce calcium carbonate that makes plants tough and water resistant. They can help to produce these huge sedimentary structures that are so strong that they resist wave-action and erosion.
Mangroves: They are a habitat for coral reef fish. Fish can get the nutrients that they need to survive by feeding off of them. They grow in saltwater places.
Cyanobacteria:
They are small but grow in large groups that make them visible. They are a very large and important group of bacteria. One of the most important ones around.
Zooxanthellae:A microscopic type of algae that attaches itself to different animals in the environment and provides them with nutrients that they make through photosynthesis.
Brown Algae:“Seaweed and Kelp” It can grow up to 100 feet tall.
Sea Grasses: They grow right at the base of the reef. Fish are often very vigorous when they feed off of them. Even though in some places they are abundant, they might not be very conspicuous. They grow in sheltered areas because they cannot withstand high wave-action.
Coralline Algae: In a process called “coral reef formation” the Algae manufactures calcium carbonate. The algae grows on and around the coral colonies.
